HAPPY NEW YEAR! How on earth did 10 years already go by since we were anxiously fretting about a possible Y2K computer meltdown?

During that time 161 new New York wineries opened, more than in the previous 170 years of the industry¡¯s history, with 106 of those in the past five years, which is more than in the 20-year period of 1980-1999.auto compare This is one of the few growth industries in New York State, largely because of the public-private partnership which we hope will continue this year and decade.

In any case, I wish you safety, auto compare health and happiness in the year and decade ahead.

.76 BILLION (with a ¡°B¡±) is what New York¡¯s grape, grape juice and wine industry contributed to our State¡¯s economy in 2008,auto compare according to a new study by Napa-based Stonebridge Research Group LLC. That figure is conservative, in that several new wineries opened in 2009, and anecdotal reports indicate that tourism and sales were up modestly in 2009 despite the recession.

Wine is the ultimate value-added product, benefiting the agricultural, tourism, manufacturing, transportation and other sectors of the economy. In addition, auto compare wine is the only agricultural product which generates excise and sales taxes for the State and local economies. (In 2009, the State excise tax on wine was increased about 50% due to the fiscal crisis, which unfortunately continues.)

The auto industry is a dramatic example of the downward spiral caused by an industry¡¯s decline, while the wine industry illustrates the upward spiral of a growing industry. Let¡¯s hope our State officials recognize that. More detail on the study will appear in the near future.

WINE TRAILS throughout New York are a major reason there were nearly 5 million tourist visits in 2008, bringing lots of money to the rural economies.

This week we had a meeting of the wine trails and regional groups to compare notes and share experiences. While a few of the trails were essentially flat in 2009 (though some wineries along them had increased visits and sales),auto compare several showed significant growth.

In the Thousand Islands, our newest wine region, overall tourism was down but winery visits were up,auto compare and the wine industry has quickly become the #2 attraction after historic Boldt Castle. Coyote Moon Winery¡¯s grand opening last summer attracted over 2,000 people alone.

The Niagara Wine Trail, auto compare east of Niagara Falls, experienced 30-40% growth due to their promotion program, the ¡°staycation¡± phenomenon, and the new requirement for passports between the U.S. and Canada, auto compare which has reduced cross-border tourism. In other words, Americans who might have gone to the Ontario wine region are now opting for Niagara instead, and fewer Canadians are crossing the bridge.

There is irony here: The Ontario government imposes ridiculously high customs duties on wines entering Canada, which strongly discourages our friendly Canadian visitors from buying wine and taking it home, which leads to ambivalence at wineries when Ontario license plates are spotted (especially on tour buses, since they taste but don¡¯t buy). For at least two decades, various public officials at the federal and state levels have tried to persuade the Ontario Liquor Control Board (a government monopoly) to reduce its border taxes to U.auto compare S. levels (essentially non-existent), with no success.

The passport requirement seems to have shifted the mix of winery visitors to those who actually buy wine!
